Beauty 101** Salon Confidential clip-in extensions review

Screen Shot 2013-10-23 at 11.59.13

London Social 101 was recently invited to review the Salon Confidential clip-in hair extensions.

Created by Celebrity Hair Stylist Stephanie Stevenson, Salon Confidential clip-in Hair Extensions assured me that they create an abundance of volume, gloss and bounce that we all desire. The big sell.

I’d just had my hair dyed very blonde so requested a colour match in Silky Straight.

Screen Shot 2013-10-23 at 11.59.31

When they arrived I was pleasantly surprised, they really matched my colour and felt so soft. They were also so easy to use.

I simply blow-dried my hair and straightened as normal, the sectioned off my hair so that I just had a small section down at the bottom of my hair line. I twisted the hair into three sectioned and clipped the extensions into place. I think repeated this moving up my hair line in 0.5cm intervals.

Here is my hair after:

Screen Shot 2013-10-23 at 12.19.10

Salon Confidential Hair Extensions come in 3 styles which include; Volume Wave, Bouncy Curl and Silky Straight. No curling, straightening or blow-drying needed. All 3 styles come in 17 multi-tonal colours. They emulate the look and feel of natural hair, blend with virtually any hair colour seamlessly, and they don’t ‘drop’ if caught out in the rain!

The Salon Confidential range are made from a unique modafibre material which gives retailers the perfect ethical traceability they require, but also in doing this the hair extensions remain pre-styled in three different styles to a permanently high end glossy salon finish. Resulting in less work for stylists and perfect results every time for customers. The consumer can choose for less gloss by adding dry shampoo to the hair extensions.

Full Set – RRP £45
Salon Confidential Hair Extensions come with 12 individual clips at 18 inches long and are the equivalent to a full head of hair. A full set gives the same weight of hair and finish as a full £2000 set of salon applied hair extensions. There is no curling, straightening or blow-drying needed, literally ‘Clip & Go’ for instant glamour.

‘On The Go’ – RRP £28
Salon Confidential ‘On The Go’ Hair Extensions come with 6 individual clips and are perfect for creating new on-trend styles such as the chignon or side-braid. They are ideal for a customer who would like to try hair extensions for the first time as they are completely affordable.

What’s On: Aspiring ‘Champagne Brits’ flop on fizz factor

Here at Social 101 we love a bubble or two, so imagine our shock to find out that it is actually National Champagne Week and we had no idea!

Luckily Searcys Champagne bars was on hand to put us in the know:

A survey conducted to mark National Champagne Week has today revealed that half of Brits don’t realise Champagne comes from France – despite the UK being the second biggest consumer of the drink.

Reality TV shows like Made in Chelsea and The Only Way is Essex are creating a culture of young Champagne drinkers, yet it seems the biggest sippers fall flat when it comes to basic knowledge of the drink.

The survey, commissioned by Searcys Champagne bars to mark National Champagne Week (7th to 13th October), revealed that almost one in five 25-34 year olds purchases the drink at least once a week, but staggeringly almost 60% admit that they don’t even know where it comes from.

By far the most knowledgeable drinkers were those aged 55 or older, with almost 70% correctly identifying the origins of the French drink and almost half able to tell the difference between a cheap and a premium Champagne.

Now Searcys are conducting Champagne tastings at their bars throughout the week, and Champagne operations director Joël Claustre MCA believes companies need to do more to boost people’s Champagne knowledge.

He said: “The research showed us that people like to drink Champagne but many don’t really know anything about it and therefore don’t know how to recognise quality and value for money.

“Champagne purchasing amongst younger people is growing rapidly and yet many are admitting that they would not be able to tell a great Champagne from a poor one as they don’t know what they’re looking for.

“We will be doing complimentary tastings throughout the week so that people can find what they like and talk to our experts so that they can begin to appreciate Champagne in the same way that knowledge of wines has grown.”

Searcys bars have up to 15 Champagnes available by the glass and 140 by the bottle. To find out about locations taking part in tastings visit Searcys.co.uk

The MCA after Joël Claustre’s name denotes that he is a Master of Culinary Arts, a highly-regarded title in the culinary profession.

Searcys Champagne tastings will be taking place at the following outlets, from 4pm-6pm every day of National Champagne Week (7th-13 October):

  • St Pancras Grand
  • One New Change
  • Westfield Stratford
  • Westfield London
  • Paddington
  • Blenheim Palace

What’s On: London’s immersive dining phenomenon: Gingerline

GL_Hideout_Logo
New event - The Hideout - at a mystery location from November 2013.

Gingerline, the pioneers of underground immersive dining, is offering the capital's most
daring diners and fun-seekers the chance to be transported to a parallel-reality where
cutting-edge food, art, performance and festivities collide. Taking place at a top-secret
location on the East London Line, revealed to guests just 60 minutes before the event begins,
the only thing Gingerline guests can expect is the unexpected.

GingerlineGingerline-9108

For their last project, Gingerline HQ 10,000 intrepid diners crossed the threshold during
the last 8-month sell-out run, each buying a ticket without knowing a single detail about
where or what the experience would entail and, once back in reality, no-one broke the Gingerline
Code of total secrecy. Now Gingerline is taking immersive dining to the next level with its most
exciting and ambitious event to date – The Hideout – and it is inviting your readers to join
them on this new riotous odyssey.

Founded by three years ago by Suz Mountfort & Kerry Adamson (two adventure-loving food fanatics)
as an experimental pop-up art and food project, Gingerline has cavorted and cartwheeled through
nine different ventures. Gingerline set the trend in motion, and continues to be the Gold Standard
 – or should that be Ginger Standard – for London's alternative dining scene. Its high-quality
creative concoctions have drawn comparisons with Punch Drunk and You Me Bum Bum Train, but with
delicious four-course feasting, a welcome drink, menu keepsake and an extraordinary night of
revels and revelations to boot.

Tickets will go on sale via their website www.gingerline.co.uk at 9am on September 30th for
The Hideout adventure commencing in November 2013. Tickets will cost £50 for Wednesdays and
Thursdays, and £55 for Friday and Saturday evenings. Please note that previous events have
sold out at lightening speed, so your readers are advised to book early to avoid missing out.
The event will run throughout November and December 2013. A small number of advanced bookings
are available for groups of 20+. Further details are available by contacting
bookings@gingerline.co.uk

Steph Bosset Picture 204
Take a jaunt on the Gingerline: Gingerline is powered by innovation and runs on the rails
of secrecy: on the night guests receive a text message inviting them to one of the stations
along the East London Line (increasingly known as the Gingerline), 60 minutes before the event
begins. This prosaic text is your gentle introduction to the extraordinary journey ahead.
From the station guests are guided to an unusual, top-secret location. Gingerline's revels
always include a welcome drink and four-course fine dining banquet – but all else will remain
beyond the realms of prediction.

Past events have seen guests tumble through labyrinthine corridors of doors, into the surrealist
world of a mad puppeteers workshop in Forest Hill, or submerged in a dive'n'dine experience in
a Shoreditch submarine mess hall, with "porthole" projections revealing deep sea delights.
The Secret Order of the Gingerline drew guests into a candlelit Canonbury chapel, for an
evening that was part bacchanalian booze-up, part Ginger-cult rite of passage. Guests enjoyed
a banquet boasting bone marrow delicacies, all watched over by hooded performers and the
approving faces of the saucy stained-glass windows, glinting across the room.

Explore 101 – New travel app brings European cities to life with celebrity voices

I don’t know about you but I love visiting new cities and love seeing it through a ‘local’s’ eyes! To be honest it was part of the reason I started this site, along with Sydney Social 101 and Manchester Social 101. I was so excited when I heard about a new app that gives users a glimpse into new city’s hidden gems!

Cities Talking is the new way to discover your favourite cities, for less. Whether you’re planning a mini-break with your partner, looking for a way to entertain the kids in the holidays or struggling for fun things to do at the weekend on a budget, this new travel app has got it sorted.

Showcasing the very best of Europe’s city culture, Cities Talking – which has been dubbed the “anti-tour guide” – has been designed to offer a solution to expensive, uninformative city tours, with the help of some famous voices.

At just £2.99 per walk, the app allows you to explore cities on your own schedule, while having a lot of fun along the way. Rather than regurgitating the same mundane facts that many tour guides rely on, the app uses an interactive GPS which targets your location and provides compelling facts designed to inspire, educate, amuse and entertain – whether it’s Christopher Biggins guiding you around the regal streets of London or comedian Gordon Kelly, taking you on a magical, medieval tour of Edinburgh – it’s the unique and novel way to unearth the secrets of our best loved cities.

Julie-Anne Uggla, founder of Cities Talking, commented: “In Venice me and my family paid a premium for an excruciating tour of the city – it was so busy we couldn’t hear the tour guide speak, what we did hear was completely uninspiring and we couldn’t even stop for a water break in the baking heat. At that point I thought surely there’s a cheaper, more exciting way to explore a city than this – which is when Cities Talking was born!”.

The best thing about Cities Talking is you can pause, rewind or fast forward the tour, depending on your interests and if you mishear something, not a problem, just rewind to listen again – there’s no missing out because you’re at the back of the group, like existing walking tours.

Two separate functions also allow you to tailor your walks to your personal tastes; the Inspire function lets you select points of interest, such as churches, museums, restaurants or places to visit on a rainy day, for example; the Plan function then takes it one step further, allowing you to pick your favourite locations, which are then mapped out for you to enjoy.

Walks are currently available for 10 European Cities, including: London, Edinburgh, Berlin, Amsterdam, Budapest, Florence, Paris, Venice, Bruges and Prague.

Art 101 – Quaglino’s Hosts Comedic BAFTA Photographic Exhibition

‘FUNNY HA HA?’

Photography at Quaglino’s is back and will be showcasing the lighter side of life. From Monday 9 September, luxury restaurant Quaglino’s (http://www.quaglinos-restaurant.co.uk/photography), will host an exclusive photographic exhibition of images commissioned by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).Shot by official BAFTA photographer Jay Brooks (www.jaybrooks.net), the previously unseen collection, illustrates some of the best British comedy TV talent, including Miranda Hart, James Corden, Reece Shearsmith, plus many more comedy greats.

Funny Ha Ha?’ BAFTA Portraits by Jay Brooks will run until 31 October. Brooks spent three days in the hotel basement of The Gore Hotel in 2010, shooting a selection of British comedy performers. After the initial sketching, brainstorming and gathering of props, the subjects were given a brief and then left to let their creative juices flow, which they did in abundance. The title of the exhibition, was inspired by one of the subjects, Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen, Psychoville), who discussed during the shoot, his belief that he and writing partner Steve Pemberton were not comedians but comic actors and that neither of them were “funny, ha ha” but comedic in a darker sense. Each of the performers captured in this series of portraits all mirrored this similar ethos, as most were not stand ups, but actors who do great comedy and often work with a sense of pathos, which frequently borders on melancholy and darkness. This philosophy is also symbolised in Brooks’ photography.

BAFTA Quaglino's 2

Jay Brooks is known for his cinematic style and ability to draw a seam of, often dark, humour from his subjects.  This has made him a popular choice across the worlds of advertising, TV, film, theatre and music. His characterful celebrity portraiture has graced the covers of some of the UK’s most respected publications. Jay has a continuing relationship with BAFTA, regularly contributing to their photographic archive.

Aside from his work with BAFTA, Jay has worked as a portrait photographer within music, entertainment and advertising for the last 12 years. Recent subjects include Kanye West, Daniel Radcliffe, Kim Cattrall, Ronnie Wood and Paul Weller.  He also boasts three portraits in the collection in The National Portrait Gallery.

BAFTA Quaglino's

This is the ninth in Quaglino’s ongoing series of collaborations with established photographers and emerging talents.  The legendary venue is the perfect setting for this BAFTA exhibition.  From its inception in 1929 by Giovanni Quaglino, it has become a destination restaurant, welcoming the finest in entertainment and high society alike.  With its sweeping staircase and art-deco inspired dining room, guests can enjoy a glass of champagne as they browse the comedic photos, before dining in the iconic restaurant – Or spend a night in the mezzanine bar taking pleasure in the popular Joe & Seph’s boutique popcorn bar which for the autumn season has taken wine and cheese matching to a new level and has introduced new cheese inspired flavours to complement the exhibition with recommended matching wine selections for each flavour from the Quaglino’s sommelier team.

These images form part of a unique collection of stunning portraiture that BAFTA has commissioned for its Archive and Heritage programme. Since 2007, the Academy has developed a policy of using a new photographer each year for publishing commissions and awards portraiture. These photographers are working in the international visual arena already and have individual styles that enhance the variation of the organisation’s ‘Future Archive’.

About BAFTA:

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is an independent charity that supports, develops and promotes the art forms of the moving image by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public. In addition to its Awards ceremonies, BAFTA has a year-round Learning & Events programme that offers unique access to some of the world’s most inspiring talent through workshops, master classes, lectures and mentoring schemes, connecting with audiences of all ages and backgrounds across the UK, Los Angeles and New York. BAFTA relies on income from membership subscriptions, individual donations, trusts, foundations and corporate partnerships to support its ongoing outreach work.

About Jay Brooks:

Portrait photographer Jay Brooks originally studied Film & TV Set Design at Wimbledon School of Art but truly fell for photography after a road trip across America in the mid 90’s.

His original theatrical studies have, however, left a lasting impression on his photographic style and method of working. Jay’s keen interest in location and acute attention to detail, storyboarding and props combine, often with a dark seam of humour, to create unique environments for his portraits.

His graphic, cinematic style and atmospheric lighting has made him a popular choice across the worlds of film, television and theatre, music and advertising. His characterful celebrity portraiture has graced the covers of some of the UK’s most respected publications including The Guardian Weekend Magazine, Sunday Times Culture, The Independent and Time Out.

Jay has a continuing relationship with BAFTA, regularly contributing to their photographic archive, much of which has been exhibited at their Piccadilly headquarters. His ongoing, yearly project shooting some of UK’s finest Screenwriters also continued into 2012 in conjunction with the BAFTA lectures.

Jay also works regularly for The Old Vic and The Royal Court Theatre providing promotional and advertising images.

Recent advertising campaigns include Adidas Footlocker, Sony Ericsson, T-Mobile, Southern Comfort and Red Stripe and Laphroaig Whiskey

Despite being kept busy with such a varied raft of commissions, Jay still finds time to work on his personal projects; His project on Britain’s very first youth culture, the teddy boys, continues to gather pace and he regularly travels across the UK covering tradition-based dance events ranging from the conventional to the decidedly off-the-wall. Selections of both can be seen here alongside regular updates on his tumblr page.

Jay is also proud to currently have three portraits in the collection of The National Portrait Gallery.

He is based in North London where he lives happily on a diet of late nights and Haribo.

For further information, visit www.jaybrooks.net

About Quaglino’s:

From its inception in 1929 by Giovanni Quaglino to its reinvention by Terence Conran, Quaglinos of Mayfair has been a destination restaurant, welcoming royalty, rock stars and high society alike. It offers an extensive brasserie-inspired menu and specialises in fresh crustacea and platters of fruits de mer. RED HOT is a groundbreaking stills and video exhibition that celebrates red-haired male beauty while attempting to reverse the stigmas attached to ginger men in the UK.

Taking place at the Gallery in Redchurch Street from Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd of December 2013, RED HOT will be the result of a year-long photography project by Thomas Knights. Working as a fashion photographer and music video director Knights has drummed up an impressive portfolio; his work featuring in Vogue Italia, Dazed and Confused, and Marie Claire, and has also worked with Marina and the Diamonds, Labrinth, Rosin Murphy and Maya Jane Coles.

A natural redhead himself, Knights has experienced personally the negative perceptions that come with being ginger, and, having no red-haired male public role models to persuade him otherwise, he grew up feeling ashamed of his red roots. With RED HOT, Thomas has devised a photography and video concept that re-defines the perceived image of the redheaded male. The men showcased here are masculine, chiselled, cool, and proud of the way that they look. These men will be the new icons for what will hopefully be a new positive rebranding of ‘the ginger’. As Knights puts it;

“We have been conditioned to think ginger men are ugly and weak. I wanted to flip this on its head and present the redheaded male as the ‘ultimate’ alpha male.”

With celebrities like actress Nicole Kidman and model Lily Cole as elegance and style incarnate our western culture has put the ginger female on a pedestal, leaving their male counterparts outside of the limelight. No other hair colour experiences a gender inequality in the same way. Just a couple of years ago none of the London modelling agencies had any red-haired male models on their books, and red-haired actors were hugely underrepresented in TV and film. However with the

popularity of Prince Harry, Damian Lewis and Eddie Redmayne – brilliant ambassadors for the red-haired male – public opinion does seem to be changing.

Supporting RED HOT’s light hearted and positive drive for change is the Anti-Bullying Alliance, helping to highlight the seriousness of the problem in the UK.

“The Anti-Bullying Alliance is delighted that Thomas Knights is using his incredible talent and the RED HOT exhibition to celebrate the beauty of red hair. We have a long history of singling out people with red or ‘ginger’ hair as the recipient of jokes in this country – and for children in the playground this can be used as an excuse to bully and intimidate, bringing real misery and unhappiness for those on the receiving end. We hope that through this exhibition all children and adults can be proud to be red and stand up to anyone that says otherwise!”
