On the 28th September 2013 we’ve lined up an unforgettable night of
positive vibrations and high energy bass lines inna Brixton.
Celebrating nearly three decades at the top of his game, DJ Derek, has
chosen 2013 as the year he hangs up his headphones and we’ve managed
to get him back to Reggae Roast for his last London gig.

The Reggae Roast Jamdown sessions are famous for showcasing the best
dubwise acts from across the globe at Plan B, arguably South London’s
best club venue. With an EXTRA 10K OF BASS being added to the already
massive Funktion-One sound system (just for this event) cheap & tasty
cocktails (supplied by Wray And Nephews) and an inclusive and
welcoming atmosphere, there is no reason to miss this very special
night.

Dj Derek is a Bristol, in fact a British legend. Selecting Ska,
Rocksteady and Soul music for nearly three decades he has gained
respect and fans from all over the world. Now coming to the end of his
career as a selector, this session will be his last gig in London
before he retires and we’ve pulled out all the stops to make this a
wicked dance!

Foundation Reggae, old and new is the trade of the mighty Trojan Sound

Daddy Ad and vocalists Superfour plus Chucky Banton, they represent
the label in England and throughout the world.

THE LAGAVULIN ISLAY JAZZ FESTIVAL COMES TO LONDON

Screen Shot 2013-08-15 at 14.02.34

The beautiful Scottish island of Islay is host each year to its own jazz festival, sponsored by LAGAVULIN™ Single Malt Scotch Whisky. It hosts an outstanding bill of international and Scottish jazz artists: last year brought the hugely successful Neil Cowley Trio (UK Jazz Artist of the Year 2013), and this year the stars include Magnus Öström , a central figure in the new European Jazz scene.

However, Islay is a difficult place to get to, even for the most devoted of jazz or whisky enthusiasts, so this year Lagavulin, Jazz FM and The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show have come together to bring a taste of Islay Jazz to London.

For one night only, on Tuesday 3rd September, the Camden Jazz Café will be playing host to The Islay Jazz Festival, with great music from leading Scottish performers, and Lagavulin for guests to enjoy.

Tickets include entry on the night, a Lagavulin aperitif, a dram of Lagavulin 16 yo and a Lagavulin cocktail during the interval, designed by virtuoso bartender Ryan ‘Mr Lyan’ Chetiyawardana.

VIP tickets are also available, which include a seat on the balcony and a main course from the Jazz Café’s menu. The Jazz Café’s bar will also be open as usual, offering a wide range of beers, wines, spirits, soft drinks and, of course, Lagavulin.

On stage are artists who have all appeared at recent Lagavulin Islay Jazz Festivals:

Colin Steele Quintet
Over the last decade trumpeter Colin Steele has made his mark on the UK scene, winning awards and wowing audiences with his Scottish folk-tinged jazz. His quintet brings him together with four other top Scottish musicians: Konrad Wiszniewski (saxophones), Dave Milligan (piano), Callum Gourlay (double bass) and Stu Richie (drums). He is appearing again at this year’s Islay Jazz Festival.

Tom Bancroft: Trio Red
A key figure in the Scottish jazz scene for over 20 years, drummer, composer and bandleader Tom Bancroft’s latest project focuses on musical storytelling, with mash-ups, improvisations and original compositions drawing on the group’s extensive live experience. Trio Red features Tom on drums with Tom Cawley on piano and Per Zanussi on bass.

Comedy 101** THE BOY WITH TAPE ON HIS FACE: MORE TAPE

Lee Martin for Gag Reflex presents:

THE BOY WITH TAPE ON HIS FACE: MORE TAPE

25th JUNE – 14th JULY – UDDERBELLY FESTIVAL, SOUTHBANK

Boasting a unique blend of stand-up comedy, mime, vaudeville and puppetry, The Boy With Tape On His Face was the runaway hit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He just completed a phenomenally successful 22 date West End run at The Duchess Theatre and now he brings this critically acclaimed show ‘The Boy With Tape On His Face:  More Tape’  to this year’s Udderbelly Festival at Southbank.

After appearances at the Royal Variety Performance, BBC Comedy Proms with Tim Minchin at the Royal Albert Hall and on ITV’s Comedy Rocks with Jason Manford it would appear the sky is the limit for this utterly unique comedy phenomenon.

The brainchild of New Zealand stand-up Sam Wills, The Boy appeals to audiences of all ages – this charming character opens up a world of beguiling mime, hilarious puppetry, willing audience participation & the undeniable power of gaffer-tape.  The silent world inherent in Wills’ shows is perfect antidote to the plethora of motor mouth comics who tend to dominate the circuit.  Non-stop talking was in fact how Wills started out; a successful stand-up and street performer, his comedy was already getting attention before he came up with The Boy, mainly to challenge himself to stage a show without words.  What started as a challenge quickly grew into a global phenomenon, leading to awards, stellar reviews, sell-out tours in the UK and New Zealand, high profile television appearances and even a video game & pilot for the BBC.  His debut show scooped a myriad of five star reviews and an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination for best newcomer as well as the international tour of the UK, Ireland, Europe & South Africa being an instant sell out. Beautiful, uplifting and uniquely hilarious, The Boy With Tape On His Face harks back to an innocent bygone era, yet remains totally of its time and one of the most strikingly original shows out there. Mime with noise, stand-up without the words, drama with no acting. This show speaks for itself.

As the sunshine beamed down, Hard Rock Calling saw a packed crowd of over 80,000 enjoy a weekend of music across three stages. Saturday’s bill saw Paul Weller, Miles Kane, Twin Atlantic and Kodaline play some of their finest sets on the main stage, while Klaxons, Tribes, The View and The Cribs all ripped up the Pepsi Max Stage.

The crowds were roaring for the evening’s headliners Kasabian, who opened their 17-song set with ‘Days Are Forgotten’, before blasting through ‘Shoot The Runner’, ‘Reason Is Treason’, ‘Club Foot’, ‘Empire’, ‘LSF’, and finishing with a mind-blowing version if ‘Fire’ that got the crowds going wild.

The sun continued to shine down for Sunday’s line up. Black Crowes, Alabama Shakes, Zac Brown Band and Flamin’ Groovies were just some of the names that graced the stage.

Sunday night headliner Bruce Springsteen returned to Hard Rock Calling in a highly anticipated performance, as he belted out ‘Born In The USA’, ‘Jungleland’, ‘Bad Lands’, ‘Born To Run’, ‘Wrecking Ball’ and a rare live performance of ‘I’m On Fire’ to a packed crowd. Bruce was joined on stage during ‘Dancing In The Dark’ by the first of his special guests – his mum and sister. He was later joined by the Zac Brown Band for an amazing version of ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze Out’.

Hard Rock Calling attracts some of the worlds biggest names to its stage, with previous headliners including The Who, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Aerosmith, Peter Gabriel, Pearl Jam, The Police, The Killers, Rod Stewart and Bon Jovi.
